Lois Heckel was born on Vancouver Island. After completing her B.A. at U.B.C., she relocated to Calgary to completed her B.Ed. After in Education. She taught grades 1-4 for 25 years in Calgary.
Needing a change, she started a career in E.S.L. and worked at Bow Valley College in the various program streams. Here, Lois found with her teaching background and love of meeting new people, as well as helping others, that E.S.L. was a good fit.
At the college, she met Frances Jablonca, a fellow teaching colleague, and her daughter Charlotte, who was deafblind and was taking courses at Bow Valley College. Having a personal interest in Charlotte inspired her to want to know more about the Deafblind community, and, has offered her an opportunity to use her experiences to help others. She joined the board in the fall of 2017.
